Medicare Part D Enrollment

You can enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan as soon as you are eligible for Medicare. For most people this happens three months prior to their 65th birthday, however, there are other scenarios where people can enroll early such as being on Social Security disability for a certain amount of time.

You must be eligible for both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B to enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

There is a 7-month window that centers around your Medicare Part B effective date in which you can then enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

Most people enroll at the same time you sign up for Medicare, which typically is during your Initial Enrollment Period and includes the three months before your 65th birthday,  the month of your 65th birthday, and no later than 3 months after your birth month.

Medicare Part D Late-enrollment Penalty

If you wait to enroll and don’t enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan during your Initial Enrollment Period as explained above, then you will be assessed a penalty when you do finally enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

This occurs even if you do not currently take any prescriptions.

The exception is if you are opting out of Medicare Part B due to having credible coverage with your employer. When you do finally enroll in Part B that is when you also may want to enroll in a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

You can enroll in a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan as an addition to Original Medicare, or you can get Medicare prescription drug coverage with a Medicare Advantage plan.

Many Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage to give beneficiaries a comprehensive coverage plan, and that can be a very cost-effective way to get prescription drug coverage.

You can use our website to check the cost of a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan on its own or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage.
